People Are Tired of Talking to Screens.

By Shik Consulting Group

Screen fatigue is real, and it’s changing how people buy. We’re living through a strange moment in marketing. Consumers are more connected than ever, yet they trust less than ever. They’re targeted with precision, yet often feel completely unseen. They receive dozens of branded messages a day and remember almost none of them. Step outside the digital bubble, and a very different picture emerges:

Trust has gone analog.

Reviews can be bought. Influencers are sponsored. Consumers know it. Recommendations from people with nothing to sell: friends, neighbors, coworkers, often carry more weight than another polished campaign. Trust hasn’t disappeared. It’s simply gone back to where it started: real relationships.

People can smell a script.

The moment a brand sounds overly rehearsed, attention disappears. But an honest, imperfect story from an actual person can make someone stop and listen. In a world of polished content, imperfection increasingly reads as authenticity.

Being targeted isn’t the same as being heard.

Brands can “know” their customers, their sizes, habits, birthdays, browsing behavior, without ever really understanding them. Data tells you what people do. Conversation helps reveal why they do it. And customers can feel the difference.

Recognition beats prediction.

The barista who remembers your order creates a different feeling from an app that predicts what you’ll buy next. Being remembered by a person feels like care. Being predicted by an algorithm can feel like surveillance.

So what does this mean for your brand?

It doesn’t mean abandoning digital.

Digital is essential. But digital alone is now table stakes. The brands that stand out are finding ways to add a human layer back into the customer experience:

  • Pop-up events where customers can meet the actual team
  • Handwritten notes included with an order
  • Building community instead of simply producing more content
  • Asking questions before pitching answers

Screen fatigue isn’t just a marketing problem. It’s also an opportunity. While everyone else is optimizing click-through rates, customers are craving something algorithms can’t replicate: genuine human attention.
